The Testimony of Hands

68.43.59, chain

68.43.59, chain fragment, 15 centimeters (6 inches) long
San Gabriel de Yunque (A.D. 1598–1610)
UNM field school collection
Photograph by B. Bernard

The individual links in this chain are about 2 millimeters (about 3/32 inch) in diameter. A chain this fine might have been worn about the neck to support a religious medallion. A base metal chain, such as this one, would have been affordable to most colonists on the northern frontier of New Spain.
