This pendant is beautiful, yet
technologially simple: a piece of shell, cut into a rectangle,
with holes drilled at two corners. It is 8 centimeters (3 inches)
long. The typical blue highlights of abalone shell do not show
in this photograph but are apparent in natural light. Besides
finding widespread use along the U.S. West Coast, abalone shell
artifacts were traded deep into North America. A second pendant
